FPIs pull ~₹21,000 cr in September — crude, dollar, yields
CDSL-cited equity selling through 18 September sits near ₹20,974 crore after July–August inflows. Friday’s cash tape still showed a small FII buy day — monthly still red.
60-sec
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have sold roughly ₹20,974 crore of Indian equities so far in September (through 18 Sep), per CDSL figures cited in public wraps, after net buying of about ₹20,200 crore in July and ₹29,630 crore in August. With that September selling, That CDSL wrap puts 2026 YTD equity outflows near ₹2.5 lakh crore, above the under-₹1.7 lakh crore full-year 2025 outflow cited in the same piece.
This is a flows story, not a verdict on India Inc. The same Monday tape opens with a weak-week hangover: Sensex week close 74,294.46 (−0.65%), Nifty 23,346.40 (−0.22%). Friday cash still saw FIIs net buy ~₹599.54 crore and DIIs ~₹1,019.69 crore — a green day inside a red month.
Drivers named in that wrap: higher US rates/yields (Fed range framed at 3.75–4% in that piece), Brent still above $100, and a softer rupee (week’s low chatter near 95.92–95.96, intraday breach of 96). Friday settles: Brent $103.87, WTI $100.30; USD/INR close 95.96 (−7 paise).
Takeaway: September FPI selling so far is a crude + dollar + yield tape — watch whether primary-market IPO demand stays a partial offset while secondary selling runs.
Analysis
Month red, day green — don’t collapse the two
A monthly FPI outflow through 18 Sep (₹20,974 crore, /CDSL) can coexist with a single Friday net buy (₹599.54 crore). Headlines that say “FPIs are back” off one session miss the month; headlines that say “India is being abandoned” miss that DIIs bought more than FIIs on Friday and that primary-market FPI interest can still run in an IPO-heavy tape.
Why crude, USD, and US yields travel together into India flows
Three channels show up again and again in India equity flow weeks:
- Oil above $100 — India is a large net importer. Higher Brent feeds inflation and current-account chatter and often pressures the rupee.
- USD/INR near 96 — a weaker rupee is a mark-to-market hit for unhedged foreign holders and a reason some desks delay fresh equity allocation.
- US yields / Fed path — when US policy rates and the 10-year stay firm, the yield gap that pulls money into EM equities narrows. A wealth-desk quote in that wrap framed the Fed funds range at 3.75–4% as part of that squeeze.
None of these three is an “India-only” story. Same week, Wall Street closed with US Treasuries above 5% and oil still over $100 — classic global risk-off weather for EM equity desks.
What the week’s index print adds (without inventing Monday open)
’s week wrap: Sensex −0.65% to 74,294.46, Nifty −0.22% to 23,346.40, after a truncated week under elevated crude and rising global bond yields. Friday itself was mixed: Nifty +75.80 (+0.33%) while Sensex slipped 19.63 (−0.03%) into the close. GIFT Nifty Saturday colour: 23,300.50 (−0.26%) — a soft cue into Monday, not a guaranteed open.
Support/resistance chatter in broker notes (Religare via : Nifty support 23,000–23,100, resistance 23,600) is technical colour, not a Capital Chronicle forecast.
Soft spots (do not flatten)
- ₹20,974 crore figure is through 18 Sep; later sessions can revise the month.
- Another wrap (New Kerala, 20 Sep) cited exchange selling near ₹23,676 crore with primary inflows still positive — different cut, same direction. We lead with the CDSL ₹20,974 crore through 18 Sep print and flag the parallel figure.
- YTD ~₹2.5 lakh crore vs 2025 under ₹1.7 lakh crore is that wrap's comparison — do not invent finer monthly tables.
- Primary-market FPI buying can run while secondary selling is red; do not treat one as cancelling the other without numbers.
