Analysis

RBI’s NBFC data: retail leads, services slow

The data cover NBFCs in the upper and middle layers and HFCs — about 87% of NBFC credit, RBI says. Retail growth nearly doubled its year-ago pace. Services credit slowed to 16.2% from 24.0%: commercial real estate was buoyant, but trade and transport operators decelerated. Faster gold-loan growth sits alongside the jewellers’ strong quarter (Titan, Kalyan updates); RBI does not link the two.

Angel One: more leverage, fewer new SIPs

Angel One’s Q2 FY27 numbers (filed 6 Oct):

  • Average client funding book: ₹74.53 billion (about ₹7,453 crore), +40.5% YoY and +21.4% QoQ — a record, the company says. September alone averaged ₹78.71 billion.
  • Client base: 39.98 million (+17.3%); gross new clients 1.49 million (−14.1%).
  • Unique mutual-fund SIPs registered: 19.30 lakh (−19.0% YoY).
  • Commodity average daily turnover: ₹2,438 billion (+105.5%), even as its commodity market share fell to 44.0% from 65.1%.

The twist: fewer new clients and fewer new SIPs — but more borrowed money in client accounts. Margin funding lets clients buy shares partly on credit; it magnifies gains and losses.
